Like The Sims, Only Better

Room PlannerPlenty of planning goes into home furniture layout and shuffling the pieces around physically just to get the look right is lots of hard work.

Many of us probably have, at some point, been surrounded by sketches of likely arrangements for our homes, scrunching up bad ideas and redrawing the layouts again and again till we get the right layout.

But there’s really no need to start laying out your pencils, rulers, erasers, geometric compasses and paper once you see that new wardrobe on the Beds.sg Megastore.

For those of you who haven’t already noticed, we’ve included a virtual room planner on our main site, just to make your potential layouts a lot easier to visualise.

So save a couple of trees and plenty of grief. Just grab some measuring tape and a computer with Web access; you’re good to go.

Virtual Reality

If you’re familiar with simulation games, you’ll be pretty adept at using our room planner.

After all, it’s just like building your dream home in the wildly popular game, The Sims; except, its not a virtual character who’s going to be living in it.

It’s you.

Getting started is really easy. Sign up for an account (not a must, but it’s free and you can get to use more features) and log in to your Room Planner account.

Starting Your Plan

You can choose to start from scratch or to begin with the standard four walls. The dimensions are customisable and, as you’ll find later, the room can be resized and reshaped simply by clicking and dragging the walls and corners.

Your Bare Room

After entering the values given to you by your measuring tape, you’ll have yourself an empty room waiting to be furnished.

Adding Doors

To factor in movement area (opening and closing of doors, walking space etc) and lighting, start by incorporating the doors and windows of the room into the walls. You can even put in a flooring that’s similar or identical to yours to make it look all the more realistic.

Factoring In The Openings

If the particular room has more than one similar object, like doors for example, you can differentiate them by labeling each item with the Text tool.

Your Basic Layout

Now start inserting furniture, starting with the more essential ones, like your bed and wardrobe in the bedroom. The rulers on the side help you gauge the amount of space between furniture.

If you need second opinion, you can also post the link to your plan on our forum threads for other forum users to view, comment and modify.

Toggle everything around till you’re satisfied and before you know it, you have a bird’s eye view of your room.
